As a player, Doddie had an irresistible talent that took him to the heart of every team he graced - from Stewart’s Melville to Melrose, Newcastle Falcons to Borders, from Scotland to the British & Irish Lions - winning 61 caps over a decade of appearances. Driven by his sportsmanship, infectious sense of humour and boundless energy, he set stadiums alight when on the charge like a mad giraffe .

Then in November 2017, 67,000 fans at Murrayfield stood in unison for their hero as Doddie came out onto the pitch flanked by his three sons. Now, at the age of 48, Doddie faces an entirely different adversary: Motor Neurone Disease.

It’s a challenge he has tackled with undaunted positivity. In his tireless campaigning to raise funds for MND research, Doddie has transcended the world of sport: since his diagnosis, the outpouring of respect from all over the world has been unprecedented.
