A Journey Out of Season
Mary Hansen
During the month following the Second Word War many families were being reunited. For young Rufus it meant another separation. His parents and grandfather had returned to Europe to help with the desperation left by the war. Rufus and his grandmother traveled across plains and mountains, snow, poverty and the ill treatment of the people they meet. Rufus learns of racial prejudice and seeks solution to the problems it causes for one of his new friends. He learns that the way grown up do things is not sensible and questions many things. He learns about Quaker testimonies and how to ride his own horse. He learns what it means to tell your own truth. we see historical events through the memories of older F/friends recounting their stories.
