Emma Post is a force to be reckoned with. Living in a run-down studio apartment in the Lower West Side of Manhattan and earning a modest living as a figure model, she has a general "punch first and ask questions later" approach to life. After getting caught up in a murder investigation where she was a suspect, she befriends an unlikely ally, a modest cop named Dennis who epitomizes everything she distrusts in this world despite him proving to be an all-around stand-up guy.

Meanwhile, It's the height of the '90s tech boom and wealthy philanthropist and business mogul, Erasmus Vandenberg has dreams of retiring and spending his remaining days as a soon-to-be discovered artist. However, not long after hiring Emma as a private portrait model, he meets with an unexpected demise. Everyone assumes it was natural causes, except Emma, who - for reasons which she doesn't understand - inherits the bulk of his fortune. Determined to find out the cause of his death, Emma enlists the help of Dennis, along with recently retired homicide-detective-turned-private-investigator, Jose Ortega to help her find answers. Unfortunately, that also means having to join forces with her old rival, Rue Brennan, and Rue's shady Cyber Forensic Consultant boyfriend, Darwin Fennec.
