The story of a peasant boy in 17th century Bohemia who becomes a soldier for the Austrian Habsburg imperial army. During this time, he fights in battles from the mountains of Italy to the vast lands of Russia, and finds love in an unexpected place. Eventually, his life and that of his family are put at risk by forces beyond his control and against which he must go to war again to save.
