The Endless Mulligan: Short Shots from the Golf Whomper
T Allen Winn
Golf is a supposed to be the gentleman’s game but that is for gentlemen to decide. I’m a Whomper, a hacker to most. What happens on the course is often worth repeating because it isn’t always about a good round. Bad golf and bad golf decisions make for forced friendly fun among foursomes of all kinds. That’s why golfers incorporate the use of the mulligan. Extra do-overs can lend to endless possibilities. I’ve accumulated these golf short stories for more years than I dare count. I sincerely hope that those who supplied the fodder appreciate the tongue and cheek approach to the story telling. I have been the source of many of these outings as well. Sometimes I have excluded names. Other times I have included the names of my partners in crime on the links. All meant for fun reading, making sport of myself as well as of my assortment of playing partners and unique situations. Life’s lessons learned. While the theme is based on golf, look beyond the rounds and embrace the journey. Personalities and personal quirkiness tend to float to the surface during a friendly round of golf fellowship. Most have been memorable and too often they have been unforgettable. From the courses located in the South Carolina upstate, Greenwood, Abbeville and McCormick counties to where I reside in retirement bliss on the South Carolina Grand Strand, a round is usually sprinkled with all sorts of challenges. The course layout, the various hazards and even the local animal population can play intricate roles in a round. And then there are the rules associated with playing the game. For what it is worth, rules are extremely overrated, and gentlemen are seldom found in the golf circuit of my Whomper World. We adjust the rules when appropriate. It takes all kinds to form a foursome. As for the term, Whomper, you’ll experience that journey in the opening short shot. Even if you have never graced a driving range, a putting green, tee box or fairway, you’ll enjoy this lighthearted approach to a game not meant for some to play. Buckle up, bring extra golf balls and an ample supply of do-overs. Keeping score is optional but the game begins now.
