The 1st Regiment, Vermont Heavy Artillery organized at Brattleboro and mustered in as the 11th Vermont Infantry on September 1, 1862. Most of the men were from Windham County. On December 10, 1862, its designation changed to the 1st Vermont Heavy Artillery. The most significant engagement for the Vermont 1st Artillery was at Weldon Railroad on June 23, 1864. The loss was 9 killed, 31 wounded, and 261 captured. Among the prisoners were 1 field and 17 line officers. The captured men were sent to Andersonville, where several died. Records show about 20 were transferred to Millen, GA, then to Florence, SC before being released. The regiment mustered out August 25, 1865.
