In the late fall of 2021, I took a road trip through the Four Corners region of the American Southwest - a journey into John Ford country, John Wayne country, and what the AAA used to refer to on their maps as "Indian Country" - as a bit of a meditation on all of that macho American male mythology from the movies, and on the horrors of American history which those myths elide. The photographs I took along the way were an attempt to enter into conversation with the iconography of the region, with the mythos of the west, and the American obsession with the open road.
