He began in the newspaper business as a cartoonist with the owl character "Zimmie," which started in 1902 and became syndicated nationally. This book is a reproduction of Arch Bristow's famous book published one hundred years ago with most verses coming from his Hay Rake Magazine. He began the self-published monthly magazine "Hay Rake" in 1920 at the age of 38 in a modest shoemaker's shop in the hamlet of Garland, PA. He grew it to a subscription of 20,000 in a few months and continued to publish it till about 1939. He used his cartooning skills to do almost all the illustrations and advertisements in the magazine. Perhaps after his hair went gray, he was known as the "Sage of Garland." He continued to write newspaper columns till his death in 1964.
