He was a key figure of early modernism in the theatre and also wrote hundreds of short stories, while working in his profession as a medical doctor. "The Horse-Stealers," the title story of this collection, tells the sad story of Yergunov, a hospital assistant who takes shelter from a snowstorm at a tavern, only to be assaulted by thieves.
