Molecular Neurosurgery with Targeted Toxins covers the basic science applications of targeted cytotoxins including suicide transport, immunolesioning and neuropeptide-toxin conjugates. Included are introductory considerations and background on the toxins followed by five chapters reviewing the use of the immunotoxin 192 IgG-saporin to lesion the cholinergic basal forebrain. The emphasis is on both how to use the various agents, as well as on practical applications where the targeted toxins have been used in experiments to provide new information not previously available by any other technique. This line of work has been highly successful, and as pointed out by the authors, has provided a valuable animal model of Alzheimer’s disease.
