It is not a history of the Civil War and it seeks only to tell the story of one regiment that was part of the Army of the Potomac from the time it was raised in the summer of 1862, until the end of the war. Kohler’s great-great-grandfather, Simeon Bathurst, was a member of this unit from the summer of 1862. Kohler uses the letters Bathurst sent home to help tell the story of the 148th Volunteers, giving the reader a view of the war as seen through the eyes of a member of that unit.
