Melusine ist eine mythische Sagengestalt des Mittelalters. Im Erzahlkern handelt die Sage davon, dass Melusine einen Ritter unter der Bedingung eines speziellen Betrachtungstabus heiratet, wodurch er sie an einem bestimmten Tag nicht in ihrer wahren Gestalt sehen soll: der einer Wasserfee, meist mit Schlangenleib. Melusine wird zur Quelle seines Ansehens und Reichtums, bis der Ritter das Tabu bricht.
