De eerste druk van het ABC des Geloofs door Dr. A. Comrie verscheen in 1739. De inhoud bestaat uit preken die gereduceerd zijn tot enkele hoofdpunten. Hij behandelde de werkzaamheden van het geloof in de volgorde van de letters van het alfabet. Hij legde het erop toe om alleen het bevindelijke element te beschrijven. Daardoor bleef zijn werkje goedkoop. In zijn volgende publicatie schrijft hij: 'Ik vertrouw, dat het ABC des Geloofs de goedkeuring van velen weggedragen heeft.' De inhoud heeft tot doel, de overtuigden aan te moedigen niet te rusten op ervaringen, de eerstbeginnende gelovigen aan te moedigen Christus te zoeken tot hun Zaligmaker en de gelovigen te onderrichten met het beschrijven van de werkingen van Gods Geest, maar vooral Christus te verklaren in al Zijn Middelaarsheerlijkheid om alleen op Hem te rusten.
