The Cities and Bishoprics of Phyrgia: Being an Essay of the Local History of Phrygia from the Earliest Times to the Turkish Conquest Volume One, Part One

William M. Ramsay

This is part one of volume one. Ramsay, the first Professor of Classical Archaeology at Oxford University, pioneered the study of antiquity in what is today known as western Turkey. He went on to devote the latter part of his life to applying what he had learned to the study of the New Testament. He is also acknowledged as the outstanding authority on the life of Paul. In this work, Ramsay attempts to throw some light on the question of how Phrygia has come to present the aspect that it now shows to the traveller. The contents of part I include: The Lycos Valley and South-Western Phrygia: The Lycos Valley; Laodiceia: The Graeco-Roman City; Hierapolis: the Holy City; Cities of the Middle Maeander Valley: Mossyna, Motella, Dionysopolis, Hyrgaleis; The Phrygian Cities of the Lower Maeander Valley and the Carian and Lydian Frontiers; Colossai and the Roads to the East; Lounda, Peltai, Attanassos; Valley of the Kaznes and Indos; and Phrygian Cities on the Pisidian Frontier.
