Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: …to flight the pro-slavery company from Atchison, sent to capture him. The house of Albert Fuller was a shelter for Brown and his party. The first settlers were Charles Bateman, J. B. Parrott, Alfred Fuller, James Piper, W. R. Hodges, A. Ash, and J. W. Taylor, who named the township. The first marriage was that of W. T. Wilcox to Lucretia Green, February, 1858. Its. first district school was organized in 1861. Straight Creek Township belonged, prior to 1869, to the Kickapoo reservation. J. H. Thompson claimed land in 1854 and settled in 1855. John Hibbard came in 1856. S. J. Rose, Wnu Chambers, W. L. Estes, T. Burns and James Hastings were other early settlers. G. W. Weister built the first mill. J. Morrow, J B. Rafter and E. Moore owned land in this section of the county, G. B. Waynant and T. W. Easly were early trustees of the township. Soldier township’s first settler was Wm. Kline, who came in 1857. Other pioneers were Henry Rancier, William Knipe, W. Branham and the Fairbanks brothers. The first postoffice was Smithland, which was the name of the man from whom William Kline bought his land. The largest postoffice now is called Soldier City. G. Hamer, D. M. Thompson, S. K. Linscott were owners of land in this locality. Soldier township is located in the northwest corner of the county and is well watered by Soldier Creek. Netawaka Township was formerly in Brown County and occupied in the east by the Kickapoo Indians until they were located on their diminished reservation in Brown County. The land was bought by the Union Pacific and opened for settlement in 1870The first postoffice was New Eureka which was three miles north of Netawaka. B. F. Vaughn was the first settler on the site of Netawaka. Among early settlers were Jacob Kern, D. H. Sutherland, Roger…
