Joan Nelson, in her very own personal story about her son, wants to help other parents understand their gay children. Joan’s son, King, died with complications of the HIV/AIDS virus. She started writing to ease the pain of losing her son to the virus. She realized through the memories of their special relationship that he would be with her always. She also wanted to tell others about the fear, anger, and discrimination that followed an HIV/AIDS diagnosis and living with HIV/AIDS.
