The book argues through a social historical approach to literature, that the environment both social and physical influences how authors perceive reality. It argues that the authors’ perception of Shona marriage across the periods has been hampered by the socio-historical epoch they found themselves in. Factors such as education, Christianity, Western values and sensibilities and patriarchial background have been found to be variables which have been found to be variables which also affected the novelists’ perception of Shona marriage.
