Jewel Sue is in the apprenticeship of a healer. She wants to heal, so it is necessary that she familiarizes herself with all aspects of magic, herbalism, sorcery, and mysticism. As well as learning to grow and tend plants, she must learn to undo spells and coax poisons out of bodies. To learn specific crafts, she must study with the masters of those arts; those who practice with feverish enthusiasm. This book finds Jewel Sue in the unnerving house of Mecca Magda, a fearsome gypsy witch who enjoys the crueler and darker side of magic. One of the most valuable lessons that Jewel Sue gains is that Mecca Magda’s nasty streak does not stem from her being a witch. Each being that Jewel Sue interacts with is an individual. Labels and preconceived notions are meaningless. This book teaches that all living things are special and that we each are capable of many wonderful things.
