James Lee finds himself following his friend Calvin Woodruff into a hellhole called Mud Flats, where he ends up being the rescuer of a girl running away from home. The man helping her run away dies from a beating he received in Mud Flats, leaving her to fend for herself with the help of James Lee. Although they are two completely different people coming from different lifestyles, they find themselves more and more dependant on each other. His wife had died five years ago and the girl was engaged to be married back home, but somehow they manage to find each other despite the complications.
