It is the era of the baby boomers, and a family in rural Oklahoma are having their fourth child. The story is told through the eyes of this child, Angela Fox. Angie takes us through the early years of life with uncommited parents until the family is separated and ends up in another part of rural Oklahoma, with a big, loving family, who teach the children the true meaning of family life. The childrenas lives are back on the rocks when their mother ignores them and the oldest child disappears. The rest of the children are shifted from home to home, separated and reunited again and again, until a stranger comes into their lives. He starts his relationship with the family as the darkest of humans, but brings the family together in the brightest way.
