The Handsome Man

- The book begins: Bond Street, deserted by shopping and sightseeing crowds, is not exhilarating. It is in fact rather depressing, to one who takes it between seven and eight o'clock, on a typically wet and drizzling London night. Save for an occasional belated clerk, a watchman or two and a policeman, the young man, who was making his way from Regent to Clifford Street, found it practically his own and he did not like it. He had not been in London for more than a year and his thoughts were dreary enough without having a dull, deserted street as a background.
