- Found in this compilation are sketches of four influential women. Elizabeth Fry was an English Quaker philanthropist who was one of the chief promoters of prison reform in Europe. Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor of medicine in modern times, while Florence Nightingale was trained as a nurse, introducing sanitization during the Crimean War, lessening cases of cholera, typhus and dysentery. Finally, Mary Slessor, the Scottish factory girl, was the pioneer missionary of Calabar.
