The ship was cheered, the harbour cleared, Merrily did we drop, Below the kirk, below the hill, Below the light-house top. Ancient Marinbr. Very swiftly the midsummer holidays glided away. The cherries hung in bright clusters on the walls of the garden, the scarlet strawberries peeped from beneath their green leaves, and the deep blue sky of July had long replaced the paler and cooler sky of June.
Mr. Wake, said Florence, one day in the end of July,
have you heard from uncle John?and what does he say about Charles ?
I heard from him yesterday, my dear; and with regard to Charles, he says that it will be better for him to remain at the ‘ Orchard, ’ as it is not a good plan to change schools, and Charlie is getting on very well.
Shall we never see each other? said Florence, in vain endeavouring to repress her tears.
Surely, my dear, you will see each other. Charlesis to spend all his long holidays, that is midsummer and Christmas, in Scotland, while he is to be with me at Easter, and any little odd times during the year. And I must have you also. I could not do without you. We shall ask your uncle to let you come often here.

Thank you, dear Mr. Wake, said Florence, almost inarticulately.
