A noise in the hall, just outside the door, had proclaimed a change of sentries. And still the young man lay, sleepless but unheeding, upon the bed. Charles, bearing a pitcher of hot water, tapped on the door, and, getting no response, entered the room on tip-toe. There across the bed sprawled Tom, face downward, as he had flung himself sometime during the night, worn out by futile rage and tramping to and fro. Having poured the steaming water into the washbasin, Charles stepped across the floor and touched his master on the shoulder. Yourwash-water is ready, sir, said he deferentially.
