The Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence: A Local History of a National Movement

Mary Zelinka

Making history, one phone call at a time:

The Center Against Rape and Domestic Violence began as a struggling radical group four decades ago, acting on its belief that women had a right to safety and dignity. Since then it has grown into a vitally important and respected institution, a leader that has brought its community along with it.

This is its story, told by a woman who was there from the first night’s meeting on a hot night in an upstairs office in downtown Corvallis.

No one suspected that a force had just been set in motion that would ultimately change how law enforcement, courts, local government, medical professionals, social service agencies, schools, newspapers, businesses, and community members would respond to sexual assault survivors.

Our work was changing the world. And changing each of us right along with it.
