Try and Succeed: Like Girelephants Do
Nick Loren
Try and Succeed like Girelephants do introduces Geri the Girelephant. (a mix between a giraffe and an elephant) She is a little unsure of herself until she meets an older and wiser Girelephant. He simply demonstrates to Geri, using colors and paint, how trying and failing is okay. He paints everything… the grass, some ice and even gets some on Geri’s shirt, but Geri soon realizes and asks: so you try and you try until one day you find - where colors will stick nearly all of the time?
Of which he replies: that’s right and it works in all that you do - if you try things enough, it can happen for you. This gets Geri excited to try something she’s been wanting to try for a long time, riding a bike! Will she have the determination and persistence to reach her goal? Something tells me she will, but you’ll have to read the story to discover how she makes it happen!
Try and Succeed like Girelephants do was inspired to teach children the value of optimism and hard work. It shows that with a determined CAN-DO attitude and perseverance you CAN accomplish great things. With a fun and rhythmic style akin to Dr. Seuss and endorsed by Mrs. Dr. Seuss, Geri the Girelephant is taught the importance to try and to you try until one day you find, where everything sticks nearly all of the time. The message is complex while the illustrations and story keep it simple for young children to understand. Woven into the story is an introduction to colors, kindness, competition and how true grit and believing in one’s self can make your dreams come true.
