He holds the Chair of Creative Writing at the University of Hull, where he is Director of the Philip Larkin Centre for Poetry and Creative Writing. His biography of the public health pioneer J.S. Haldane, Suffer & Survive won first prize for Basis of Medicine in the BMA Book Awards 2008. His first novel On Bended Knees was shortlisted for the Whitbread Prize.
