This short study is predicated on the assumption that the ‘Mr. William Shakespeare’ on the title page of the First Folio was the pseudonym of a writer whose identity has become irretrievably lost. It will attempt to explain how the mystery came about in the first place, how it was perpetuated, and the efforts made to identify the true author.
