In farming there are more bad times than good times and for some it is still a hard way of life. Many of the people who live in this village, named Mardle, are dependent on some form of agriculture to make a living. It is a plain working village rarely mentioned in tourist brochures. Country people are resilient and make the best of what they have, but they also know how to enjoy themselves. This novel is told through their stories.
