Brazil Fado

Megan Terry

I was skeptical, I’ll admit. When a director tells me she’s doing a comedy about torture, my first thought is that the show must be a little sick. My second is that the play will surely be in bad taste. After all, nice people don’t laugh at things like that. But BRAZIL FADO is neither sick nor sickening. It’s a nicely done piece of unusual theater. And it’s funny. BRAZIL FADO is a whirlwind of action. At least three things are happening on stage simultaneously all the time, and it’s not unusual for everyone to be talking at once. The show moves from scene to scene in a split second. Actors who were Brazilian prisoners a moment ago are now American tourists or representatives of the DuPont Corporation. The play is about the mean things people do to each other, sometimes from the best of motives. It is set in Brazil seen through the eyes of four newcasters, and in the bedroom of an American couple involved in kinky sex… The humor in BRAZIL FADO comes partially in the way playwright Megan Terry plays with our stereotypes of Brazil… While the real and imaginary Brazil are being explored in the action at the front of the stage, the rear of the stage gives us a look at American bedroom sports…an often hilarious take-off on bizarre sexual variations… BRAZIL FADO explores another possibility of theater, and does what it does very, very well. It is like nothing I’ve ever seen on stage before. Anne Hillerman, The New Mexican
