The ‘Make My Day’ Law: Colorado’s Experiment in Home Protection

William Wilbanks

This book examines the first 23 cases in Colorado where citizens have used as a defense the 1985 ‘Make My Day’ law, (i.e., which broadens the ‘shooting rules’ against home intruders). The book begins with an examination of the law before and after ‘Make My Day’ and with the controversy that arose during its passage through the Legislature. The 23 cases are categorized into love triangles; neighbor disputes; disputes among friends; disputes with police; disputes among drug dealers; and landlord/tenant disputes. The final chapter summarizes the problems that have arisen during the implementation of the new law and recommends a revision that would sustain Legislative intent.
