King Solomon’s Treasures and Bess: A Companion to Jess (1887)
John De Morgan
This book includes the two novels by John De Morgan, King Solomon’s Treasures, and Bess: A Companion to Jess. Both works were intended to be parodies of H. Rider Haggard. In King Solomon’s Mines, Arthur Montmorency, called Monty in short by his intimate friends, has had enough of high society life, the parties, the balls, the pretentiousness, and meets up with Jack. He and Jack decide to seek adventure in Africa. The journey saved Monty’s life and from the day he became a comrade of Jack O'Brien, he never felt ennui. To occupy his spare time and thinking the adventure would be of interest to others, Monty jotted down the principal things that happened and set them down for all to read. Illustrated. In Bess, we are taken on an adventure with Henry Waldo Adair, retired captain of her Britannic Majesty’s Tenth Regiment of Cavalry, who, after spending nearly 35 years knocking about the world, returns to London, to boredom. Due to the age of the originals we reproduced, some pages may be found to be spotty or faded.
