James Buffalo & A Fit Of Bad Dharma
Nigel James Schroeder
Charles David Buffalo made it clear in his Last Will and Testament that he believed his oldest son James was insane. As a result, James Buffalo is required to seek the psychiatric guidance of Doctor Henry P. Whitehouse in order to receive his inheritance; Charles Buffalo’s last kick from the grave. In time, James finds comfort in the pills the Doctor gives him, the way they turn the dark days to honey. Leaving the Doctor’s office one afternoon his longtime crush, Mary Ann Lewis speaks in a hushed voice as they ascend in the elevator. Back at the Buffalo estate James stares out at the seaside grounds he has inherited overrun with wild vegetation, old sports cars parked crookedly on the lawn. A record plays as his brother Eli hands him a glass of whiskey and he downs another pill. He watches through sepia eyes as the pretty women, musicians, actors and politicians arrive all dressed to the nines for the Buffalo’s annual charity ball. He is trying to love it all though he can’t get what Mary Ann Lewis said out of his head. Who is Doctor Whitehouse and what is in the pills he is giving him? Run, James. What ensues next is a portrait of American madness, beauty, and suffering that can only be described as a fit of Bad Dharma. Set on the Tired Coast of, California.
