What was daily life like in ancient Israel? We get a good glimpse by looking at the laws of the Book of the Covenant (Exod. 20 - 23).
God revealed to his people laws on legal courts, on oaths, on slavery, and about animals. There were laws with sanctions, and those without sanctions, relying on moral suasion. Whilst many of the Old Testament laws have been fulfilled through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the author makes a case that these laws have lessons for today, especially regarding personal relationships, and are helpful for all believers to promote peace with their neighbours. Society has changed, the way God’s people worship has changed, the structure of the church has changed, but God’s morals, values and sense of righteousness certainly have not.
