An examination of the lives of those commemorated by a special day in the Church of England’s Alternative Service Book of 1980. There are 19 British men and one woman, Josephine Butler, who have died since the Reformation. The study investigates how they, and not others came to be chosen. It aims to stimulate wide interest in the role fo saints and the criteriaa for their recognition. The author suggests the addition of more women, of Church leaders who sought social justice for Britain, and people from countries of origin of Britain’s immigrants.
