Polly is eighteen when her father, a professional hunter, is killed by a wounded buffalo. Her mother died, when she was born. In theory she is totally on her own. However the Kenyans, who worked for her father and have known her all her life, are very loyal. She is determined to keep the business afloat to protect their jobs. Kenya has recently become independent and there is large scale unemployment. When she finds out that her father had borrowed heavily from the bank and they are going to close the business down and make her bankrupt, she does not despair.
