Las "Elegia de Duino" (1912-1922) tambien llamadas Elegias duinesas -"Duineser Elegien"- por haberse compuesto las primeras en el castillo de Duino, cerca de Trieste (Italia), pertenecia a la princesa alemana Maria von Thurn von Taxi-Hohenlohe, donde el poeta Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) se hallaba alojado por invitacion de la princesa. Rilke es uno de los tres poetas alemanes mas importante de todos los tiempos. Pero no sera hasta 1967 cuando aparece "Obras de R.M. Rilke", en Plaza & Janes traducidas por Jose Maria Valverde, con introduccion de un texto de Lieselott Delfine-Leopold, que es cuando se empieza a conocer su obras, aunque Rilke habia visitado Espana (Toledo, Cordoba, Sevilla y Ronda) en el invierno de 1912-1913 hasta mediados de febrero.
