Romantic Prayer: Reinventing the Poetics of Devotion, 1773-1832

Christopher Stokes (Senior Lecturer in Romantic Literature, University of Exeter)

Romantic Prayer is the first study to treat poetry of the Romantic period through the motif of prayer. Whilst religious faith (and its crises) have always been crucial to accounts of Romanticism, scholars have largely focused on matters of belief, denominations and theology. Prayer–intimately linked with the lived experience of religion–offers an entirely new window into Romantic religion and its discontents. Taking its lead from the deep affinity between poetic language and prayer, this monograph covers a range of canonical writers, from the identifiably religious to the staunchly sceptical, illustrating how prayer is central to literature’s engagement with a secular age.
