Banqueting rules: 1st report of session 2014-15

Great Britain: Parliament: House of Lords: House Committee

The House Committee has approved revised rules for banqueting, as proposed by the Refreshment Committee. The revisions seek to ensure that the rules concerning banqueting are clear and to better protect Members financially when sponsoring events for third parties. They reflect lessons learnt from experience of the rules which have been in place since 2009 (House Committee 3rd Report, Session 2008-09 (HL Paper 144)). The main changes include: Members may accept a small non-monetary gift from event organisers if the gift is worth not more than GBP25 (Members would still be obliged to consider whether such a gift should be registered); Clarification that clubs and societies can hold banqueting events, provided there is no direct or indirect financial gain for the club or society; UK Registered Charities may seek both direct and indirect financial or other kind of support at House of Lords functions (previously only indirect gain was allowed); and a reminder on the face of the rules that Members must attend the entirety of functions they sponsor, and that Members retain responsibility for satisfying themselves that it is appropriate for a particular organisation to hold a function at the House.
