Ranchers in the 2020's demand even more public land for grazing their livestock, and helicopter roundups are the preferred method for their removal by the government. The government has little regard for the safety of the horses in the roundups, and many are injured or run to death in each action. Many young horses are left orphaned, that is if they manage to survive the cruel roundups. The previous novel in this series, Spirit of the Wolf left off with main characters Caleb and Lacy working to protect Yellowstone National Park's wolf population. Caleb gets a tip about the plight of the wild horses and considers an offer to come and write a story on them. Also, voters in Colorado consider a ballot measure that requires Colorado Parks and Wildlife to begin to rebuild the extinct Colorado wolf population. Caleb becomes interested in being involved in that effort while his friend Lacey wants to expand her sports clothing line into the larger Denver fashion market. The two consider the move to Colorado, and Caleb starts his work with wild horses and eventually the new wolf pack. This historical fiction novel, loosely based on the life of the famous Sand Wash Basin stallion Picasso, documents the mistreatment of mustangs while also highlighting problems Colorado's wolves will face as their range expands across the state. Throughout the story the main characters will face danger and many harrowing encounters as they continue with the exciting adventures experienced in the previous book, Spirit of the Wolf.
