Freddie has passed the tests prescribed by Beautiful Dorothy of the Garden. Ruth has earned her wings in clashes with the Bloodbirds and the witch of the good Princess Laurel. Sir Fredrik and Ruchelle are charged with bringing back the young, witty one on their return. Members of the Guard, immune from the black plague, have forfeited their youth and past lives and donned the badge of the Guard-their gray eyes.
In Book 2, Gairfield is being inundated by the plague set upon the land and villagers. Mason and Sawyer are completing the construction of their ship, unaware of why it was being built.
