At the age of ten, the two were separated. The black boy was sold at a slave auction and escaped from a Coffle. The black slave, Manuti, used the Underground Railroad to find freedom. When the Civil War broke out, Manuti joined the Union Army. The white man, Jaxson, attended the military academy the Ciidal and became an officer in the Confederate Army. The story is about these two men who find themselves on opposite sides of the warring armies. Throughout the war, Antietam, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, and Richmond both had opportunities to kill the other, but through divine intervention, the bullets did not find their target.
