A young girl named Vea was born out of wedlock to teenage parents. Her parents were from the Midwest, and it was difficult for her father to find stable work there so that he could adequately provide for his family. They decided to send their first born Vea to Chicago to live with her grandfather and step-grandmother hoping that Vea would be able to have a better life.
