We Call It a Cross

A young woman leaves Ireland, her family, and everything she knows with nothing but a tattered trunk, a toothache, and a promise of employment with Quakers in America. But her fiance, who is supposed to meet her at the boat, is nowhere to be found. She scours the crowd on shore for sight of him or his family to no avail. Is it possible she gave him the wrong day or time? Is he injured or sick? Has she misinterpreted his feelings, or has he changed his mind and given up on her and their plans?

The boat bellows, spits steam, and lurches forward; she tries to get off the boat to go find him but is held back by the crush of the onboarding crowd. Besides, the boat is slowly pulling away, and now she can see her family on shore gradually disappearing.
