For han begyndte at skrive Nana, vidste Zola intet om Theatre des Varietes i Paris. Dramatikeren Ludovic Halevy inviterede ham til at deltage i en operette med ham der den 15. februar 1878 og tog ham bag scenen. Halevy fortalte ham utallige historier om det amorose liv for stjernen Anna Judic, hvis menage a trois fungerede som model for forholdene til Rose Mignon, hendes mand og Steiner i Zolas roman. Halevy forsynede ogsa Zola med historier om beromte prostituerede som Blanche d'Antigny, Anna Deslions, Delphine de Lizy og Hortense Schneider, som Zola trak pa, da han skabte sin titelkarakter, Nana.
