Al entrar en la Casa Grande intenta pasar desapercibida, pero pronto hara gran amistad con Ines, la hija mas joven de la familia, que le ensenara a leer, y se enamorara de Javier, el mas alocado de los hermanos.
Empieza a gestarse un amor imposible y tragico por el cual sera despedida y se enemistara para siempre con dona Amelia, la madre de la familia. Javier parte a Cuba y Manuela rehace su vida, consiguiendo exito en sus empresas hasta que, justo antes de empezar la Guerra Civil, descubre algo que le hara recordar su pasado…
