In this work Oliver Sacks travels to the remote islands of the Pacific using the tools not only of a neurologist but also of an anthropologist, investigating large groups who have been affected by a defect or physical deficiency. On the islands of Pingelap and Pohnpei, two small islands of Micronesia, a very high proportion of the population are completely colour blind. Sacks, accompanied by an ophthalmologist and a Norwegian scientist who also sees the world in black, white and infinite greys, investigates the influence of this peculiarity on everyday life and how it is reflected in their myths and their culture.
