Biological research on ageing is being conducted in a number of different fields, and one prime goal of this text is to collect information on this research in order to contribute to a broad interdisciplinary discussion. The 16 chapters in this book cover the age correlated phenomena that occur in different biological systems. The main emphasis is put on nervous tissue, which is discussed with respect to the biochemical and physiological modifications that occur during aging and to certain pathological modifications, in particular Alzheimer’s disease. Among other topics included here are modifications occurring at the level of cellular structures such as DNA, proteins and membranes, the control of genetic expression, and the ageing of connective tissue, with special attention being paid to atherosclerotic degeneration. One chapter reviews the theories of ageing, providing a clear and concise presentation of the different points of view.
