This book analyzes the appropriations of ethnology in Carl Einstein’s and Michel Leiris’s contributions to the journal Documents (1929-1930). As the role occupied here by the primitive Other recalls the noble savage of the Enlightenment, studying its resurgence in interwar France appears necessary.
