A dystopia headed toward complete mechanisation is created by Ty, a shift manager with an alcoholic wife. When robotic interfaces are put in place at Ty's place of employment, the bizarre tedium of working in a retail atmosphere is broken. If he's lucky, Prominents will enrol him in a re-education programme in response to any machine protest.

Ty develops an obsession with the idea of printing a live composite in an effort to divert his attention from a failing marriage. He accidentally prints a female replica of himself due to a botched work.

Ty and his family are in danger of going to jail because of Samantha, his clone (or Sam, as she insists on being known), who works for Prominent forces. Sam deviates from the straightforward Prominent edicts by courting a woman, making it practically hard to live a perilous life of lurking in plain sight.

Ty must come to terms with the full weight of the mechanisation and brutality that surround him as his reality starts to fall apart and he is forced to face new truths.
